Build Your Lawn Care Business: Set the Bar HIGH!
Set ambitious goals for yourself and your business. Raising the bar will give your team an objective to shoot for. If you set it too low, there is no need to stretch the cumulative abilities of your organization.
This is a mindset. Determine how big you can build the picture. Get the big picture and reduce it down to smaller numbers. Determine how big you aim to get and then break it down and identify where the desired results are going to come from. For example, look at the overall goal and determine the number of jobs that need to be sold to break even and then the number of sales needed to meet or exceed your overall objective.
But it’s important that you remain aggressive in your goals. Here are some great quotes about setting and achieving goals to get you motivated:
“The tragedy in life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.” ~ Benjamin Mays
“The entrepreneur is essentially a visualizer and actualizer… He can visualize something, and when he visualizes it he sees exactly how to make it happen.” ~ Robert L. Schwartz
“Give yourself an even greater challenge than the one you are trying to master and you will develop the powers necessary to overcome the original difficulty.” ~ William J. Bennett
“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it.” ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
“By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands — your own.” ~ Mark Victor Hansen
So, how are you going to make it happen? Be realistic with your goals and make sure you execute your ideas. Identify your goal, the action(s) you plan to take, and any reward expected in return.
Build Your Lawn Care Business…TO LAST!
Business writer Jim Collins has stated that a company’s success is not contingent on one individual leader, but dependent upon lasting characteristics that set them apart from the crowd. One of the best ways to build a company to last is by developing a strong sense of purpose beyond making money. Your employees must be driven, not just by the company’s financial gain, but also by team and individual progress towards an overarching objective.
There are three aspects to think about here: Systems, People, and Vision
1. SYSTEMS – Systematize your business like it’s a machine. To achieve real growth you will need to install systems throughout your business. Systematize everything and anything you can think of. Formalize your businesses processes and make sure they become institutionalized within your company.
In the end you wish to build your business like a car engine… one without a single knock or a ping in it… and now you’re revving that engine up!
2. PEOPLE- We are in an industry with low barriers to entry. This means that it’s not real tough to enter the market and become a lawn care technician. It may be tough to become a GOOD lawn care technician, but it’s not a tough market to enter.
So, as you hire you’re going to bring in a lot of people who may not fit the bill for the long term. But the idea of building your team is to bring in one person at a time. These will be people upon which you can instill your vision. And then you bring in the next, and the next, and so on…
Some of these employees will show tremendous loyalty. THOSE ARE THE KEEPERS! So, be sure that the people you surround yourself with are great people. In this industry, this is a big challenge, but they ARE out there. You may have to search awhile to find worthy employees, but TRUST US, they are well worth the wait!
3. VISION –Create a vision for your business. Make sure this vision of yours is communicated throughout your organization. Ensure that your workforce understands and is on-board with your vision. Print it, frame it, or even put it on a mug… Whatever it takes, internally marketing your vision will ensure that your employees understand what the main objective is.
Most importantly, enable your employees with the resources and processes needed to carry out your vision!
